In 1989, I established the Judith Dowling Asian Art gallery now located in Boston on historic Beacon Hill. The gallery specializes in fine Japanese art. The collection of paintings, ceramics, lacquer, Buddhist and Shinto arts, textiles and folk art are displayed in traditional Japanese surroundings on two floors. Above the main gallery, I have a private gallery/apartment which is open by appointment.
Renowned in Boston and New England as a specialist in Japanese art, I received my M.A. from Harvard University in East Asian Studies with a thesis on Japanese art. During the seventeen years that my husband and I were masters of Leverett House, one of the undergraduate residential colleges of Harvard, I arranged to house several visiting Japanese art historians from Tokyo University, as well as other Japanese institutions. These relationships have grown into a supportive network for further study and understanding of Japanese art and culture.
Other Japan related activities in the Boston and New England area where I have had a significant role is as a founder of the New England East Asian Art seminars and as a member of the board of directors of the Japan Society of Boston.
Acquisitions are made through private estates, auctions, international and local dealers as well as frequent visits and periods of residency in Japan. Exhibitions are held in the gallery each year giving the public the opportunity to view select objects and to expand their knowledge of Japanese art and culture. I am an exhibitor in the International Asian Art Fair in New York.
I purchase works of art offered for sale to the public in our main galleries or privately in my apartment. Often works of art are brokered directly to private collectors, dealers, or institutions for ten per cent of the selling price. All works are accepted on consignment with negotiated terms and are insured while in the gallery.
As a member of the International Society of Appraisers, I provide appraisals for individuals and institutions for insurance, charitable donations, estate and gift taxes, estate planning, and conservation assessment. All appraisal work is done on an hourly basis.
I am available for consultation on acquisition, disposition, condition and conservation of works of art.
